How to form it

  • verb (dictionary form)かたわら
  • nounのかたわら

How it is used

Written: 'alongside A (one's main job or activity), also doing B' over a period of time. A and B are ongoing activities, not two actions at the same moment; for those, use 「ながら」.

Examples

  1. 彼は仕事をする傍らボランティア活動をしている。

    He both works and volunteers.

  2. 彼女は会社勤めのかたわら、週末に料理教室を開いている。

    Alongside her office job, she runs cooking classes at weekends.

  3. 父は農業を営むかたわら、地元の歴史を研究している。

    My father farms and, alongside that, researches local history.
