How it is used

'Not stopping at A, but extending to a wider B'; fairly formal, often with 「も」 or 「まで」 in the second half. Close to 「〜に限らず」, but stresses going beyond a limit.

Examples

  1. 東高校の甲子園進出は、関係者にとどまらず町中の話題になった。

    Eastern High going to the National Baseball Tournament has become the talk of not just those involved, but the whole town.

  2. 彼女の興味は日本語にとどまらず、韓国語や中国語にまで広がった。

    Her interest didn't stop at Japanese; it spread even to Korean and Chinese.

  3. 彼は話を聞くにとどまらず、自分で現場を見に行った。

    He didn't stop at hearing about it; he went to see the site himself.
