How to form it

  • nounのもとで/もとに
  • nounをもとに（して）

How it is used

「〜のもとで／のもとに」: under someone's guidance or authority, or under certain conditions. 「〜をもとに（して）」: using A as material or a basis. The particle changes the meaning.

Examples

  1. 法の名のもとに不正は決して許されない。

    In the name of the law, wrongdoing must never be permitted.

  2. 新しい監督のもとで、チームは大きく変わった。

    Under the new manager, the team changed dramatically.

  3. 旅行先で食べた味をもとに、自分でカレーを作ってみた。

    Going by the flavour I'd tasted on my trip, I tried making curry myself.
