How it is used

'Or', listing alternatives; more formal and written than 「または」 or 「か」. It can also act as an adverb meaning 'perhaps', usually with 「かもしれない」.

Examples

1. 今年あるいは来年に家を建てるつもりなんです。

   I intend to build a house either this year or next.

2. 申し込みは、電話あるいはメールでお願いします。

   Please apply by phone or by email.

3. 彼の言うことは、あるいは本当かもしれない。

   What he says may perhaps be true.
