Meaning

Not A! As if A! (A is not true)

How to form it

  • verb (dictionary form)/い-adjectiveものか/もんか
  • な-adjective (stem)/nounなものか
  • verb (dictionary form)/い-adjectiveものですか

How it is used

A strong, emotional denial or refusal shaped like a question: 'No way!', 'As if!'; in speech often 「もんか」. More emotional than 「〜わけがない」, which states a reasoned judgement.

Examples

  1. 私はホラーが嫌いだから、あんな映画なんか見るもんか！

    I hate horror movies, so there's no way I'm going to see that kind of film.

  2. 負けるもんか。最後まで走るぞ。

    No way am I going to lose. I'm running to the end!

  3. あんな失礼な人には、もう頼むものか。

    I'm never asking someone that rude for anything again.
