How it is used

Admits A, then says B did not follow as expected, as in 「〜たものの、まだ〜ない」. Mostly written; the second half is not a command or intention. It lacks the frustration that 「〜のに」 carries.

Examples

  1. 日本語能力試験を受けるつもりであるものの、まだ勉強をし始めていない。

    Even though I'm going to take the JLPT, I still haven't started studying.

  2. 新しいパソコンを買ったものの、使い方がよく分からない。

    I bought a new computer, but I don't really know how to use it.

  3. 料理ができるとはいうものの、簡単なものしか作れない。

    I may be able to cook, but I can only make simple dishes.
