How to form it

How it is used

Follows a noun of time, frequency or area to mean 'over', 'throughout', 'for a full…', stressing length or extent: 「三日間にわたって」, 「全国にわたって」. It is formal and common in writing and the news.

Examples

  1. あの大学の野球チームは１０年間に渡って優勝をし続けました。

    That university's baseball team kept winning the championship for 10 years.

  2. 会議は五時間にわたって続いた。

    The meeting went on for five whole hours.

  3. 大雨で、広い地域にわたって電車が止まった。

    Heavy rain brought trains to a halt across a wide area.
