〜必要meaning and usage

Meaning

How to form it

  • verb (dictionary form)必要がある
  • verb (dictionary form)必要はない
  • nounが必要だ

How it is used

「〜必要がある」 means there is a need to; 「〜必要はない」 means there's no need to, more formal than 「〜なくてもいい」. 「Nが必要だ」 means N is needed; before a noun it is 「必要な」.

Examples

  1. 夏休みだから学校へ行く必要はないんだ。

    It's summer vacation so there's no need to go to school.

  2. この店に入るには、予約が必要です。

    You need a reservation to get into this restaurant.

  3. 旅行の前に、ホテルに連絡する必要があります。

    You need to contact the hotel before the trip.
