一行だけ書く
手帳に毎日長い日記を書こうとしましたが、何度やっても続きませんでした。三日目ぐらいで書くことがなくなり、白いページが増えるたびに、手帳を開くのがいやになったのです。そこで最近は、一行だけ書くことにしています。書く内容は、その日に気づいたことで十分です。

I tried writing a long diary entry in my planner every day, but however many times I tried, I never kept it up. By about the third day I had run out of things to write, and every new blank page made me less willing to open the planner. So these days I make a point of writing just one line. Something I noticed that day is quite enough.
たとえば昨日は、「駅前の店先に、今年初めての黄色い花が並んでいた」と書きました。感想や反省を入れる必要はありません。事実を一つ残すだけで、後から読み返したときに、その日の景色や空気が少し思い出せます。

Yesterday, for example, I wrote: “Outside the shop by the station, the first yellow flowers of the year were set out in a row.” There’s no need to add thoughts or reflections. Just keeping one fact is enough: when I read it back later, I can recall a little of that day’s scenery and air.
一行なら、忙しい日でも短い時間で書けます。何日か後にそのページを開くと、「あの日は花がきれいだったな」と思い出すことがあります。大切なのは、上手に書くことではなく、観察が手元に残ることだと考えています。

One line takes only a moment, even on a busy day. When I open the page a few days later, I sometimes think, “The flowers were lovely that day.” What matters, I think, is not writing well, but keeping what I have observed close at hand.
今日の一行は、まだ書いていません。帰り道で何を見つけるか、少し楽しみにしています。

I haven’t written today’s line yet. I’m rather looking forward to what I’ll find on the way home.
Three expressions
寝る前には、スマホを見ないことにしています。
I make it a rule not to look at my phone before bed.
「〜ことにしている」: after the dictionary form or nai form of a verb, a habit you have set yourself and keep to. 「〜ことにした」 is just the decision; 「〜ことにしている」 means it has become a habit. In the text, 「一行だけ書くことにしています」 means “my habit now is to write just one line”.
席はたくさんあるので、予約する必要はありません。
There are plenty of seats, so there’s no need to book.
「〜必要はない」: after the dictionary form of a verb, “there’s no need to …”, a little more formal than 「〜なくてもいい」. In the text, 「感想や反省を入れる必要はありません」 means “there’s no need to add thoughts or reflections”.
このボタンを押すだけで、お湯が出ます。
Just press this button and hot water comes out.
「〜だけで」: after the dictionary form of a verb, “just by doing …”, stressing that one small action is enough to have an effect. In the text, 「事実を一つ残すだけで」 means “just by keeping one fact”.
One small thing to do
Tip
In a notebook or your phone’s notes app, write down one small thing you noticed today. One line is enough; no need to say how you felt.
