With autumn, the menu changed at 「こもれび」, the little café Hana often goes to. At the very top it said “Seasonal special: hojicha latte”. Hana always ordered a caffè latte, but that day she decided to try the hojicha latte.

注文ちゅうもんすると、店員てんいんさんが「甘あまさはふつうとひかえめがありますが、どちらにしますか」と聞ききました。ハナさんは「ひかえめ」という言葉ことばを知しりませんでした。聞きいてみると、「砂糖さとうを少すくなくすることですよ」と教おしえてくれました。ハナさんは甘あますぎる飲のみ物ものが少すこし苦手にがてです。それで、「じゃあ、甘あまさひかえめでお願ねがいします」と言いいました。

When she ordered, the barista asked, “We do it regular or less sweet. Which would you like?” Hana didn’t know the word 「ひかえめ」. She asked, and the barista explained, “It means less sugar.” Hana isn’t keen on drinks that are too sweet, so she said, “Then less sweet, please.”

カップからは、お茶ちゃのいい香かおりがしました。飲のんでみると、甘あますぎなくて、ほうじ茶ちゃの味あじがよく分わかりました。家いえに帰かえってから、ハナさんはノートに「甘あまさひかえめで」と書かきました。来週らいしゅうはココアを、甘あまさひかえめで頼たのんでみるつもりです。

A lovely smell of tea rose from the cup. When she tasted it, it wasn’t too sweet, and the roasted hojicha flavour came through clearly. Back home, Hana wrote 「甘あまさひかえめで」 in her notebook. Next week she’s going to try ordering a hot chocolate the same way: less sweet.

Three expressions

  1. 母ははの料理りょうりは、いつも塩しおひかえめです。

My mother’s cooking is always light on salt.

「〜ひかえめ」: “a little less …”, “not too much …”. You often hear 「甘あまさひかえめ」 and 「塩しおひかえめ」; when ordering, add 「で」: 「〜ひかえめでお願ねがいします」. 「甘あまさ」 is a noun made from 「甘あまい」 by dropping 「い」 and adding 「さ」. In the story, 「甘あまさひかえめで」 means “a bit less sweet”.

  2. 新あたらしいパン屋やのカレーパンを買かってみました。

I tried the curry bread from the new bakery.

「〜てみる」: “try …ing”, “… and see”. A verb’s te form + 「みる」; 「みる」 is usually written in kana. In the story, 「ほうじ茶ちゃラテを飲のんでみることにしました」 means “she decided to try the hojicha latte”.

  3. この靴くつは大おおきすぎて、歩あるきにくいです。

These shoes are too big, so they’re hard to walk in.

「〜すぎる」: “too …”. Drop the 「い」 of an i-adjective or the 「ます」 of a verb, then add 「すぎる」; the negative 「〜すぎない」 means “not too …”. In the story, 「甘あますぎなくて」 means “it wasn’t too sweet”.

One small thing to do
