Ali knocked on the walls with his hand and stood in the corridor listening for a minute. In the ground-floor flat, he could hear the neighbour’s TV. In the upstairs flat, he could only hear birds outside. It had two windows, too.

The upstairs flat is a little more expensive than the ground-floor one. But Ali said, “I’ll take the upstairs one.” On the train home, he drew the upstairs flat in his notebook. He drew two windows, and next to them he wrote 「静か」.
Three expressions
On my days off, I do things like washing and cooking.
「〜たり 〜たり します」: “do things like … and …”. A verb’s ta form + 「り」 picks out two things from several, and the sentence ends with 「します」. In the story, 「トントン したり、…音を 聞いたり しました」 means “knocked on the walls and listened”.
This room is brighter than that room.
「AはBより〜」: “A is more … than B”. 「より」 goes after the thing you compare with, and the sentence is about A. In the story, 「二階の 部屋は 一階の 部屋より 少し 高いです」 means “the upstairs flat is a little more expensive than the ground-floor one”.
At night I can hear trains in the distance.
When a sound reaches you by itself, use 「が」 + 「聞こえます」; when you listen on purpose, use 「〜を 聞きます」. In the story, 「となりの テレビの 音が 聞こえました」 means “he could hear the neighbour’s TV”.
One small thing to do
Tip
Close your eyes and listen for one minute: what sounds can you hear in your room? Say them with 「〜が 聞こえます」, for example 「車の 音が 聞こえます」.
