洗濯は朝七時
メイさんは先月、このアパートに引っ越してきました。仕事から帰るのが遅いので、洗濯はいつも夜十時ごろにしていました。ある朝、ごみ置き場の横に、手書きの紙が貼ってありました。「洗濯機は夜九時までに使いましょう。音が下の部屋までよく聞こえます。」

Mei moved into this block of flats last month. She gets home late from work, so she always did her washing at around ten at night. One morning, there was a handwritten note stuck up beside the bin area: “Please use washing machines before 9 p.m. The noise carries clearly to the flat below.”
自分のことかもしれない、とメイさんは思いました。夜は使わないほうがいいと分かりましたが、朝は忙しくて、洗濯をする時間がありません。その夜、洗濯機をよく見ると、「予約」というボタンがありました。メイさんは寝る前に洗濯物を入れておいて、朝七時に終わるように予約しました。

It might be about me, Mei thought. She understood that it was better not to use the machine at night, but her mornings were busy and there was no time for washing then. That night, when she took a good look at the washing machine, she found a button labelled 「予約」. Before going to bed, Mei put her washing in and set the timer so it would finish at seven in the morning.
次の朝、ピーピーという音で目が覚めました。ベランダで洗濯物を干していると、となりの部屋の女の人もシャツを干していました。メイさんは「おはようございます」と言いました。引っ越してから、となりの人にあいさつしたのは初めてです。その夜も、メイさんは寝る前に予約ボタンを押しました。

The next morning, a beeping woke her. As she was hanging out her washing on the balcony, the woman next door was hanging out shirts too. Mei said, “Good morning.” It was the first time she had greeted a neighbour since moving in. That night, too, Mei pressed the timer button before she went to bed.
Three expressions
雨が降りそうだから、傘を持っていったほうがいいですよ。
It looks like rain, so you’d better take an umbrella.
「〜ほうがいい」: “you’d better …”, “it’s best to …”. A verb’s ta form + 「ほうがいい」 gives advice; to advise against something, use the nai form: 「〜ないほうがいい」. In the story, 「夜は使わないほうがいい」 means “it’s better not to use it at night”.
後ろの席の人にも聞こえるように、大きい声で話しました。
I spoke loudly so that the people in the back seats could hear too.
「〜ように」: “so that … (can) …”. Before it you usually find a potential form, a nai form, or verbs like 「聞こえる」 and 「終わる」 that aren’t under your control; after it comes what you do for that purpose. In the story, 「朝七時に終わるように予約しました」 means “set the timer so it would finish at seven in the morning”.
旅行の前に、ホテルを予約しておきました。
Before the trip, I booked a hotel in advance.
「〜ておく」: “do … in advance”. A verb’s te form + 「おく」, to get ready for something later. In the story, 「洗濯物を入れておいて」 means “putting the washing in beforehand”.
One small thing to do
Tip
Check whether your washing machine has a 「予約」 button, or one marked “timer” or “delay”. If it does, try setting it tonight so that the wash finishes in the morning.
