On Friday night it was raining. Yuta, the little boy next door, came round, but he looked glum. “Tomorrow’s sports day. But it’s raining.” Sarah said, “Let’s make a teru teru bozu together.”

Together they made a little doll out of white tissue. Yuta drew a smiling face on it with a pen. Then they hung it from the balcony on a piece of string. “Please let it be sunny tomorrow.”

On Saturday morning, Sarah and Yuta opened the curtains together. It wasn’t raining. The sky was cloudy, but in the east it was a little blue. The two of them said “thank you” to the teru teru bozu.
Three expressions
日曜日は 雨が ふりませんように。
I hope it doesn’t rain on Sunday.
「〜ますように」: “I hope …”, “please let …”. Add 「ように」 to the masu form of a verb to make a wish, often said silently or written on a wish card; for something you don’t want to happen, use 「〜ませんように」. In the story, 「あした 晴れますように」 means “please let it be sunny tomorrow”.
いっしょに 昼ごはんを 食べましょう。
Let’s have lunch together.
「〜ましょう」: “let’s …”. Change the 「ます」 of the masu form to 「ましょう」 to invite the other person to do something with you. It often goes with 「いっしょに」. In the story, 「いっしょに てるてる坊主を 一つ 作りましょう」 means “let’s make a teru teru bozu together”.
三人で カレーを 作りました。
The three of us made curry.
「二人で」, 「三人で」: a number of people + 「で」 says how many do something together. Doing it alone is 「一人で」. In the story, 「二人で 白い ティッシュの 人形を 作りました」 means “the two of them made a doll out of white tissue”.
One small thing to do
Tip
Check tomorrow’s weather forecast, then write a small wish of your own with 「〜ますように」, such as 「あした 晴れますように」. A notebook or a sticky note is fine.
