In April, Mira’s department decided to hold a welcome party for the new staff. Mira can’t drink alcohol. But the party was for her and the other newcomers, so she couldn’t very well stay away. When she asked Nakamura, the senior colleague at the next desk, for advice, Nakamura said, “You don’t have to drink. Just toast with oolong tea.”

On the day, when they were ordering drinks, Mira said quietly, “Oolong tea, please,” and two other people ordered the same. The department manager said, “Thank you all for your hard work. To our new colleagues: cheers,” and everyone raised their glasses. Without drinking any alcohol, Mira was able to join in the toast properly.

Partway through, someone started gossiping about a person who wasn’t there that day. It seemed to be meant as a joke, but Nakamura said, “Let’s save that for when they’re here,” and turned the conversation to the food. Mira made up her mind to remember that way of handling it.

On the train home, Mira wrote three things in the notes on her phone: “Oolong tea is fine for the toast.” “The first thing to say is 「お疲れさまです」.” “Try not to gossip about people who aren’t there.” And at the end, she added: “Next time, start a conversation myself.”
Three expressions
I have an important exam tomorrow, so I can’t go out tonight.
「〜わけにはいかない」: “can’t very well …”, because of duty or what is proper. It isn’t that you are unable to; it would be wrong or awkward to. When you simply aren’t able to, use 「できない」. In the story, 「休むわけにはいきません」 means “she couldn’t very well stay away”.
This morning I left home without eating breakfast.
「〜ずに」: “without …ing”. It means the same as 「〜ないで」 but is slightly more written. Drop the 「ない」 from the nai form and add 「ずに」; 「する」 becomes 「せずに」. In the story, 「お酒を飲まずに」 means “without drinking alcohol”.
I try to go to bed by midnight every night.
「〜ようにする」: “try to …”, “make a point of …”, for something you are careful to do; for something you want to avoid, use 「〜ないようにする」. In the story, 「いない人のうわさ話はしないようにする」 means “try not to gossip about people who aren’t there”.
One small thing to do
Tip
Say 「お疲れさまです」 today to someone you study or work with, in person or by message. If you study alone, write it at the end of today’s study notes.
