JLPT N1 grammar

〜こそ〜が: meaning and usage

Meaning

Although A is B (strong emphasis)

How to form it

  • nounこそplain formが
  • verb (masu-stem)こそするが
  • い-adjective (-く form)こそある/ないが
  • な-adjective (stem)でこそあるが

How it is used

Uses 「こそ」 to grant that A is true, then turns to a contrasting B: 'A may well be so, but…'. It stresses the conceded part more than 「〜ことは〜が」 and leans formal.
