How to form it

  • verb (dictionary form)どころではない/どころじゃない
  • nounどころではない/どころじゃない
  • い-adjectiveどころではない

How it is used

Says the situation leaves no room for A: 'this is no time for'. It can also say reality goes far beyond A: 「寒いどころではない」 ('cold doesn't begin to describe it'). Speech often says 「〜どころじゃない」.

Examples

  1. 今は卒業式だからふざけるどころじゃないよ。

    We're at the graduation ceremony so it's no time for screwing around!

  2. 明日が締め切りなので、遊びに行くどころではない。

    The deadline is tomorrow, so going out to have fun is out of the question.

  3. 山の上の冬は、寒いどころではなかった。顔が痛くなるほどだった。

    Winter up in the mountains was far worse than cold; it made my face hurt.
