How it is used

Read 「じょう」. Attached to Sino-Japanese nouns, it means 'in terms of A' or 'from the standpoint of A': 「法律上」, 「仕事上」, 「健康上」. Somewhat formal; close to 「〜の上では」 but joined straight to the noun.

Examples

  1. 職務上の秘密は、たとえ家族にでも漏らしてはいけない。

    You must not leak work-related secrets, even to your family.

  2. 健康上の理由で、会社をしばらく休むことにした。

    I decided to take some time off work for health reasons.

  3. この映画は、教育上よくないと言う親もいる。

    Some parents say this film is bad from an educational point of view.
