How it is used

“In terms of, as far as A shows”, as in 「地図の上では」 or 「数字の上では」, often hinting that reality may be different. Somewhat formal.

Examples

  1. 仕事の上では、 彼は全く問題がない。

    He's not a problem at all at work.

  2. 地図の上ではすぐ近くですが、歩くと三十分かかります。

    On the map it looks close, but it takes thirty minutes on foot.

  3. 書類の上では、彼はまだこの会社の社員です。

    On paper, he's still an employee of this company.
