How to form it

  • verb (dictionary form)/verb (ta-form)とおり（に）
  • nounのとおり（に）
  • nounどおり（に）

How it is used

'Just as A, in line with A'. After a verb or 「Nの」 it is read 「とおり」; attached directly to a noun it becomes 「どおり」 (「予定どおり」, 「説明どおり」). Before a noun use 「〜とおりの」 / 「〜どおりの」.

Examples

  1. 昨日の授業は試験があったけど、今日はいつも通り。

    There was a test in class yesterday, but today it's business as usual.

  2. 説明書に書いてあるとおりに組み立ててください。

    Please put it together exactly as the instructions say.

  3. 電車は予定どおりに駅に着いた。

    The train arrived at the station right on schedule.
