• noun+に沿って/に沿い
• noun+に沿った/に沿う+noun

How it is used

Two uses: physically along something long, such as a river or road, and acting in line with a plan, policy or wish without departing from it. 「〜に基づいて」 uses something as a basis; 「〜に沿って」 stresses following it.

Examples

1. 先生の説明の内容に沿ってメモを取るべきだ。

   You should take notes following the content of the teacher's explanation.

2. 川に沿って、桜の木が並んでいる。

   Cherry trees stand in a row along the river.

3. お客様のご希望に沿ったお部屋をお探しします。

   We'll look for a place that matches your wishes.
