How it is used

Acting to meet someone's expectations, requests or support: 'in response to', 'living up to'. It typically follows 「期待」, 「声援」 or 「要望」. Compared with 「〜に応じて」, it carries an active effort to satisfy them.

Examples

  1. そのピアニストはアンコールに応えて２曲弾いた。

    The pianist played two songs in response to the encore.

  2. 両親の期待に応えて、彼は一生懸命勉強した。

    To live up to his parents' hopes, he studied as hard as he could.

  3. 客の声に応えて、店は新しいメニューを作った。

    In response to customer feedback, the restaurant created a new menu.
