JLPT N1 grammar
〜にこしたことはない: meaning and usage
Meaning
It's better if A; it's better if it's A
How to form it
- verb (dictionary form)/verb (nai-form)に越したことはない
- い-adjectiveに越したことはない
- noun/な-adjective (stem)(である)に越したことはない
How it is used
'Nothing beats A, A is best': a common-sense judgement, often as 「〜に越したことはないが」, admitting A is not essential. Milder than 「〜に限る」, which is a strong personal recommendation.
