〜っぱなしmeaning and usage

How to form it

  • verb (masu-stem)っぱなし
  • verb (masu-stem)っぱなしにする
  • verb (masu-stem)っぱなしのnoun

How it is used

Follows the masu-stem. It means leaving something as it is when it should be dealt with (「電気をつけっぱなし」), or a state going on and on (「立ちっぱなし」). It is usually negative and more colloquial than 「〜たまま」.

Examples

  1. ドアは一日中閉まりっぱなしだった。

    The door remained closed all day.

  2. 窓を開けっぱなしにして出かけてしまった。

    I went out and left the window open.

  3. 今日は朝から夕方まで立ちっぱなしで、足が痛い。

    I've been on my feet from morning till evening today, and my legs ache.
