How it is used

'In contrast to A': contrasts two things, usually with the speaker's judgement (one good, one bad); also 「それに引き換え」. More subjective than the neutral contrast of 「〜に対して」.

Examples

  1. お兄さんは優秀だった。それに引き換え私はだめだ。

    You were excellent, big brother. I, on the other hand, am no good.

  2. 去年の大雪に引き換え、今年の冬はほとんど雪が降らない。

    Compared with last year's heavy snow, there's hardly any snow this winter.

  3. 隣の犬がおとなしいのに引き換え、うちの犬は一日中ほえている。

    The dog next door is quiet, whereas ours barks all day long.
